Tec 5 Matthias Richard Mattes served as the driver of a Tank Destroyer in the 7th Armored Division. His vehicle bore the tactical marking 7A-814TD-C23 and was nicknamed “Corsair.” An inscription on its gun read: “Charlotte loves Pappy,”. Other Crew Members of the Tank Destroyer:
When Corsair was hit in combat, all crew members except Tec 5 Mattes managed to escape. Burial and Identification Tec 5 Mattes was initially buried as an Unknown X-94, at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery on November 8, 1944. His identity was later confirmed, restoring his name and story to history. |
